Vietnam and Cuba vow to take special relationship to new heights

VOV.VN - Top leaders of Vietnam and Cuba vowed to further strengthen and take the traditional solidarity, special friendship and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries to new heights, during talks in Havana on September 26 (local time).

First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee and President of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez warmly welcomed Party General Secretary and President To Lam of Vietnam on his state visit to Cuba, and congratulated his guest on being elected as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President of Vietnam.

Diaz-Canel Bermudez once again expressed deep condolences to Vietnam over the recent passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, praising the late Party leader’s significant contributions to Vietnam’s revolutionary cause, the development of Vietnam-Cuba relations, as well as his tireless efforts for the global socialist movement.

He described To Lam’s state visit as special, reflecting the high regard and revolutionary solidarity between the two parties and states, contributing to enhancing mutual trust and creating tangible changes in bilateral relations moving forward.

The Party, State, and people of Cuba hold the traditional, special, and loyal friendship with Vietnam in high esteem and will continue to stand in solidarity with Vietnam in its socialist construction efforts, he assured his guest.

The Cuban leader congratulated Vietnam on the significant and historic achievements it has recorded in implementing the Doi Moi (Renewal) process for the past nearly 40 years, helping to elevate the country’s position and prestige globally. He also appreciated Vietnam’s theoretical and practical experiences regarding socialism and its path toward socialism.

To Lam for his part emphasized that his visit to Cuba reaffirms the high regard and strong determination of the Party, State, and people of Vietnam to enhance the special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the two parties and countries.

Vietnam always follows with keen interest Cuba’s development, he said, valuing the ongoing efforts of the Communist Party of Cuba in implementing the resolutions of its 8th Party Congress, as well as measures Cuba has undertaken to overcome difficulties and challenges and to spur socio-economic development.

To Lam thanked the Party, State, and people of Cuba for their valuable sentiments and assistance towards Vietnam during its struggle for national liberation in the past, as well as in its current cause of national construction and defense. He affirmed Vietnam’s consistent stance in solidarity with the just struggle of the Cuban people, calling for the lifting of the embargoes and sanctions against Cuba and for removing Cuba from the State sponsors of terrorism list.

Both host and guest expressed their satisfaction at the positive development of Vietnam – Cuba relations at all levels and in all fields. They emphasized similarities between the two countries in terms of history, spirit, and the path toward socialism, as well as the strong ties that have been nurtured by President Ho Chi Minh of Vietnam and Commander Fidel Castro of Cuba over time.

To take their special relationship to new heights, the two sides agreed to increase mutual understanding, exchange, and coordination on political and strategic issues, including maximizing the effectiveness of visits and exchanges in flexible forms, particularly at the high level. They noted that the relationship between the two parties serves as the strategic political foundation for bilateral relations across various fields.

The two sides agreed to effectively organize the sixth theoretical workshop between the two parties and the second international workshop on the revolutionary vision of President Ho Chi Minh and Cuban Revolutionary Leader Fidel Castro, along with other joint activities in the near future.

To Lam and Diaz-Canel Bermudez underscored the importance of enhancing the effectiveness of the Vietnam-Cuba Intergovernmental Committee and other mechanisms in the fields of defense, security, and foreign affairs.

They stressed the need to deepen and expand economic cooperation, explore new cooperation mechanisms and promote the signed trade agreement between the two countries, with the aim of raising two-way trade turnover to US$500 million in the next five years.

They also committed to creating favourable conditions for the sustainable business activities of Vietnamese enterprises in Cuba, in line with Cuba’s investment attraction policies for economic development.

Both leaders supported relevant agencies of the two countries in strengthening coordination to research agricultural production cooperation models to help Cuba enhance local production capacity, develop agriculture, and ensure food security. They also consented to increase bilateral cooperation in various fields such as energy, biotechnology, health care, tourism, telecommunications, and construction, as well as cooperation between localities and peoples of the two countries.

The two sides vowed to continue actively supporting each other in international organizations and forums.

They also shared their views on the importance of maintaining peace, stability, and development, agreeing that international disputes should be resolved through peaceful means, respecting international law and the United Nations Charter. They held that relations between nations should be based on respect for independence, sovereignty, equality, the right to self-determination of peoples, and the fundamental principles of international law, including respect for each other’s territorial integrity and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs.

To Lam extended a cordial invitation to Diaz-Canel Bermudez to visit Vietnam in 2025 as the two countries will mark 65 years of their diplomacy, and the invitation was accepted with pleasure.

During the talks, To Lam announced that the Party, State, and people of Vietnam will donate 10,000 tonnes of rice to the Cuban people. Additionally, the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee will donate 500 computers to the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee, while the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour and several Vietnamese localities will also present gifts to the Cuban people.

Immediately after the talks, the two leaders witnessed the signing of seven cooperation documents between ministries and localities of the two countries.
