Vietnam and Cuba consider developing new cooperation mechanisms
VOV.VN - Vietnam and Cuba will promote existing cooperation mechanisms, including the Intergovernmental Committee on economic, scientific, and technical cooperation, and consider establishing necessary new mechanisms to leverage their potential and strengths.
The agreement was reached during a meeting between Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz and visiting Party General Secretary and President To Lam of Vietnam in Havana on September 26 (local time).
They agreed to actively implement the signed agreements and expand cooperation among sectors, ministries, and localities in flexible forms.
Noting that Vietnam is currently Cuba’s second-largest trade partner and the largest investor from the Asia-Pacific region, both host and guest agreed to enhance the effectiveness of economic cooperation, stressing the need to focus on successful agricultural projects and explore new, sustainable collaboration avenues.
Marrero affirmed that he would facilitate Vietnamese enterprises in doing business and contributing to Cuba’s economy. Meanwhile, To Lam suggested both sides effectively deploy the trade agreement between the two countries, aiming to increase trade turnover to US$500 million within the next five years.
The two sides agreed to promote research and expand cooperation in agriculture, food processing, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, healthcare services, telecommunications, justice, tourism, construction, transportation, high technology, digital transformation, innovation, and other fields.
During the meeting, To Lam emphasized Vietnam’s deep gratitude and remembrance of the support from Commander Fidel Castro, generations of Cuban leaders, and the Cuban people to Vietnam’s past struggle for national liberation and construction.
He reaffirmed Vietnam’s consistent stance of solidarity and strong support for the just cause of the Cuban people. The Vietnamese leader appreciated the achievements of the Cuban people on their path toward socialism, despite facing many challenges, and expressed his belief that with a correct direction and great determination, the Party, State, and people of Cuba would continue to overcome difficulties and achieve new victories.
Marrero affirmed that To Lam’s visit is a historic event in the relationship between the two countries. He also thanked Vietnam for its close and valuable support towards the Cuban Party, State, and people over the years.
The two sides agreed to continue close exchanges and coordination on international issues, while supporting each other’s legitimate interests at multilateral forums.
