Vietnam affirms top priority to sci-tech development, digital transformation
VOV.VN - Vietnam gives top priority to the development of science, technology, and digital transformation, considering them as crucial measures to escape the middle-income trap and transition to a new stage of development, said a Vietnamese diplomat at the 81st ESCAP session held in Bangkok, Thailand, on April 24.

Addressing the meeting, Ambassador Pham Viet Hung, permanent representative of Vietnam to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), voiced Vietnam’s support for the United Nations’ efforts in strengthening global technology governance in line with the United Nations Charter and international law.
He noted that the Asia-Pacific region is emerging as a global innovation hub that has made notable progress in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 9 on industry, innovation, and infrastructure.
He also called on ESCAP to promote the implementation of the Global Digital Compact at the regional level and to enhance initiatives related to emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Underscoring the importance of equitable access to technology, the ambassador urged developed countries to transfer technology to developing countries, enhance knowledge sharing and capacity building, and promote innovative financial mechanisms to support digital transformation.
The 81st ESCAP session reviewed the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific. Delegates welcomed the rapid advancement of science and technology in the region and called for enhanced regional cooperation in this field. They emphasised the importance of sharing experiences on emerging technologies and minimizing potential risks.
Running from April 21 – 25, the 81st session of ESCAP has brought together around 650 delegates from over 52 member states and territories, along with international organisations, to exchange views on current and emerging policy issues for inclusive and sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific.
The meeting is expected to adopt regional resolutions, covering topics such as enhanced cooperation on the water-climate nexus, sustainable urban development, and advancing the sustainable development of middle-income countries.
