UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres begins Vietnam visit

VOV.VN - United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived at Noi Bai International Airport on October 24, beginning his official visit to Vietnam and attending the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime.

Secretary-General Guterres has a special affection for Vietnam. In his capacity as UN Secretary-General, he has consistently committed to strengthening the UN-Vietnam partnership, affirming that Vietnam is an important partner of the UN in all areas. He also maintains close personal relations and holds a strong impression of Vietnam’s senior leaders.

The Secretary-General’s official visit to Vietnam coincides with the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations (October 24, 1945 – October 24, 2025), underscoring the great importance he attaches to cooperation with Vietnam. It also reflects the parallel development journey of both sides, sharing core values and principles that have shaped and will continue to shape the future.

Vietnam is among the few countries that Secretary-General Guterres has visited more than once during his tenure. His first visit to Vietnam as Secretary-General took place in October 2022.

Over the past five decades, cooperation between Vietnam and the United Nations has flourished and proved effective. The UN has accompanied Vietnam through its post-war reconstruction and recovery, and continues to support the country’s proactive and deepening international integration.

Vietnam has participated more actively, proactively, and responsibly as a UN member state, making substantial and wide-ranging contributions across the UN’s three main pillars - peace and security, development cooperation, and the promotion and protection of human rights.

During his visit, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is expected to hold talks with President Luong Cuong, co-chair the signing ceremony of the UN Convention against Cybercrime, and meet with Party General Secretary To Lam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man.
