UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres pays visit to Vietnam today
VOV.VN - United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is scheduled to arrive in Hanoi on October 24 for an official visit to Vietnam where he will attend the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime (the Hanoi Convention).
The UN leader has a special affection for Vietnam. He once joined street demonstrations protesting the war of aggression against Vietnam. As UN Secretary-General, he visited Hanoi in 2022.
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has consistently expressed his commitment to strengthening Vietnam–UN relations and affirmed that he regards Vietnam as an important partner of the United Nations in all fields.
During his meeting with Vietnamese President Luong Cuong at the UN Headquarters in September, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was much looking forward to his official visit to Vietnam at the end of October 2025.
He highly appreciated Vietnam’s socio-economic development achievements and its increasingly elevated position on the global stage. The UN leader emphasised that Vietnam is an excellent partner, actively contributing to all of the United Nations’ priority areas, particularly in peacekeeping, sustainable development, climate change response, and just energy transition.
Secretary-General Guterres noted that Vietnam is a pillar in today’s multipolar world, and therefore emerging economies, including Vietnam, deserve a stronger voice, greater representation, and a more significant role in the global governance system.
Since joining the United Nations in 1977, Vietnam’s relations with the UN have improved and developed continuously. Vietnam has been an active, responsible, and proactive member, contributing to the common activities of the United Nations.
During this visit, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will attend the official welcoming ceremony and hold talks with President Luong Cuong, and meet with other senior Vietnamese leaders.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is expected to co-chair the signing ceremony of the Hanoi Convention alongside President Luong Cuong and deliver a keynote speech at the opening session.
