UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to visit Vietnam this week

VOV.VN - United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will pay an official visit to Vietnam and attend the opening for the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime (the Hanoi Convention), to be held in Hanoi on October 24 - 25.

The invitation has been extended by President Luong Cuong of Vietnam, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its press communique on October 20.

According to the United Nations, the Convention, adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 24, 2024, is the first comprehensive international legal instrument on combating cybercrime. It aims to strengthen cooperation among countries in investigation, extradition, mutual legal assistance, and prevention of offenses committed through information and communication technologies.

The selection of Hanoi as the venue for the opening for signing ceremony highlights Vietnam’s growing international role and recognition in promoting multilateral diplomacy and contributing to global governance, particularly in the areas of cybersecurity and digital transformation.

The event is expected to be attended by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, senior Vietnamese leaders, and delegations from around 100 countries and international organisations.
