Top legislator Tran Thanh Man receives Australian Governor-General Sam Mostyn

VOV.VN - National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man held a meeting with Governor-General of Australia Sam Mostyn in Hanoi on September 10 on the occasion of the latter’s State visit to Vietnam.

Chairman Man warmly welcomed Governor-General Mostyn’s visit which he said adds fresh impetus to further deepening and substantively advancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries. He congratulated Australia on the recent successful 48th parliamentary elections and conveyed his regards to the re-elected leaders of both houses of the parliament.

Man commended Australia’s achievements in national development, social welfare, and the implementation of international commitments, particularly noting recent policies such as a 3.5% increase in minimum wage, support for living costs, and debt relief for students.

Vietnam consistently values and seeks to promote its friendship and Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Australia, he said, appreciating bilateral cooperation achievements, especially in the legislative field. He proposed that both sides further enhance political trust through expanded delegation exchanges, particularly between the two parliaments, and effectively implement the 2024–2027 Action Programme for the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The legislator also praised the positive growth of bilateral trade, which reached US$14 billion in 2024, and expressed confidence that both sides would soon realise the goal of reaching US$20 billion in trade and doubling bilateral investment within the next 2–3 years.

He called on Australia to facilitate and accompany Vietnam in this new development phase, expanding cooperation in priority sectors such as the green economy, digital economy, science and technology, innovation, and renewable energy. He also proposed that the two countries strengthen people-to-people exchanges and expand cooperation in tourism, labour, education and training, and culture, including broadening the issuance of student, tourist, and work visas for Vietnamese citizens living, studying, and working in Australia, contributing to Australia’s development and serving as a bridge for bilateral relations.

The National Assembly Chairman called for intensified parliamentary cooperation through enhanced delegation exchanges and experience sharing between legislative bodies, particularly among parliamentary committees, friendship groups, women and young parliamentarians. The cooperation would cover legislative, institutional, and oversight matters, as well as global challenges such as digital transformation, green growth, and climate change.

He urged both sides to continue collaboration at multilateral parliamentary forums, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF).

For her part, Governor-General Mostyn affirmed that Australia remains a reliable and committed partner of Vietnam, noting that the upgrade of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership reflects mutual political trust. She underscored Australia’s continued commitment to strengthen cooperation across all areas, including parliamentary relations, in a substantive and effective manner.

The Governor-General praised the contributions of the Vietnamese community to Australia’s socio-economic development and to the Australia–Vietnam relationship. She emphasised that Australia remains committed to supporting Vietnam in human resource development, providing official development assistance (ODA), and offering financial and technical support to help Vietnam achieve its growth objectives.

Governor-General Mostyn also highly valued the effective cooperation between the two countries in education and training, noting that Australia currently offers more than 70 scholarship programmes for Vietnamese students.

She affirmed Australia’s commitment to further promoting trade and investment cooperation, gender equality, with a particular focus on women’s empowerment, and collaboration on climate change in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region.
