Vietnam values Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Australia
VOV.VN - Vietnam highly values its friendship and Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Australia, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh told visiting Governor-General of Australia Sam Mostyn during their meeting in Hanoi on September 10.

Prime Minister Chinh welcomed the Governor-General’s first State visit, emphasising that the visit would create new momentum and determination to deepen bilateral relations across multiple fields, contributing to a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region. He also shared positive impressions from his official visit to Australia in March 2024, during which the upgrade of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership was regarded as a historic milestone.
Bilateral relations have reached a level far beyond what was envisioned when diplomatic ties were first established, he told his guest.
The Prime Minister appreciated Australia’s invaluable support for Vietnam, particularly in training cadres, providing development aid and COVID-19 vaccines, and supplying aircraft to transport field hospitals to Vietnam’s peacekeeping mission in South Sudan.
Governor-General Mostyn, for her part, expressed her pleasure at visiting Vietnam shortly after the country celebrated the 80th National Day, conveying her admiration for its resilience and praising the country’s socio-economic achievements and improved living standards.
Australia wishes to be a reliable and sincere partner of Vietnam, she said, describing the Prime Minister’s 2024 visit to Australia and the upgrade to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership as a historic milestone reflecting strategic trust and a shared vision for the future.
Both sides agreed to strengthen political exchanges through all Party, State, parliamentary, and people-to-people channels; effectively implement the 2024-2027 Action Programme for their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership; and continue developing the trusted security and defense pillar, while expanding cooperation in economy, trade, investment, education and training, science and technology, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.
The Prime Minister proposed raising the bilateral trade turnover to US$20 billion and doubling investment in the next 2–3 years, expanding cooperation in potential areas such as minerals, rare earths, and renewable energy; building a national population database and national data centre; enhancing the capacity of civil servants; continuing to encourage Australian universities to expand their campuses in Vietnam; and facilitating the Vietnamese community of over 300,000 in Australia.
Governor-General Mostyn reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral ties, expanding investment opportunities in Vietnam, enhancing cybersecurity cooperation, and supporting Vietnam in hosting the signing of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime (also known as the Hanoi Convention) in October 2025.
She expressed Australia’s desire to further deepen defence relations with Vietnam to contribute to peacekeeping efforts, emphasising that Vietnam is one of Australia’s most important partners in maintaining regional peace and stability.
Australia wishes to continue cooperation by promoting ASEAN’s central role, implementing the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, and committed to supporting Vietnam in hosting the ASEAN Future Forum, as well as advancing collaboration to address cross-border challenges, enhance Mekong subregion cooperation, and tackle climate change in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, she said.
