Top legislator receives outgoing ambassadors of Cambodia, US, Philippines

VOV.VN - National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man on January 13 hosted meetings with the outgoing ambassadors of Cambodia, the United States, and the Philippines, underscoring the ongoing strengthening of bilateral ties and parliamentary cooperation.

During his meeting with Cambodian Ambassador Chea Kimtha, Chairman Man congratulated Cambodia on its recent achievements and highlighted the role of high-level exchanges in deepening Vietnam-Cambodia political trust.

He praised the fruitful cooperation between the National Assembly of Vietnam and Cambodia’s Senate and National Assembly in both bilateral and multilateral settings. He noted that the leaders of the two legislatures have regularly exchanged high-level visits and collaborated at multilateral parliamentary forums, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA). These exchanges, he said, have helped strengthen political trust and facilitated the implementation of high-level agreements between the two countries.

The top legislator also thanked Cambodia for supporting the Vietnamese community and requested continued legal facilitation for ethnic Vietnamese residents to contribute to bilateral relations.

Ambassador Chea Kimtha spoke highly of Vietnam’s administrative reforms, thanked the National Assembly of Vietnam for building the Cambodia National Assembly building as a symbol of friendship, and expressed confidence in Vietnam’s upcoming 14th Party Congress as well as long-term development goals.

The two sides shared that bilateral trade reached over US$11 billion in 2025, up nearly 12% from 2024, and agreed to continue promoting cooperation toward the target of US$20 billion in trade.

Meeting with US Ambassador Marc Knapper, Chairman Man thanked the diplomat for his contributions to strengthening Vietnam-US ties, including the upgrade to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2023.

He acknowledged progress in parliamentary cooperation, noting that both sides have regularly conducted high-level visits, maintained inter-parliamentary exchanges, shared experiences in legislation, and strengthened cooperation in areas including trade and economy, education and training, science and technology, post-war remediation, and people-to-people exchanges.

Chairman Man agreed with Ambassador Knapper’s proposal to continue enhancing exchanges of parliamentary leadership delegations, committees, and legislators from both countries. He underscored the need to promote cooperation in priority areas such as digital transformation, innovation, science and technology, clean energy, climate change response, education, and health care, while continuing the effective implementation of post-war remediation projects, including mine clearance, dioxin treatment, and support for people with disabilities.

Ambassador Knapper said he felt honoured to work in Vietnam during a period of significant growth in bilateral relations, marked by the upgrade of ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Highlighting key achievements in parliamentary cooperation between the two countries, Knapper expressed confidence that, with the support and contributions of both legislatures, US-Vietnam cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, energy, science and technology, post-war remediation, education and training, and people-to-people exchanges will continue to deepen.

He also affirmed that, regardless of his future position, he would continue to actively contribute to further strengthening the bilateral relationship.

During his meeting with Philippine Ambassador Maynardo L.B. Montealegre, Chairman Man praised the ambassador’s efforts in promoting Vietnam-Philippines strategic partnership and high-level visits.

He congratulated the Philippines on its comprehensive achievements in economy, culture, defence - security, and foreign affairs, and expressed confidence that the country would successfully host key events during its tenure as ASEAN Chair and AIPA Chair in 2026.

As 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, he called for enhanced parliamentary exchanges, local cooperation, people-to-people ties, and trade, targeting US$10 billion in bilateral trade.

Ambassador Montealegre praised the strong bilateral cooperation across all sectors and agreed that both countries should continue to boost economic and trade ties as well as people-to-people exchanges, aiming to achieve the US$10 billion bilateral trade target soon.

At the meeting, the ambassador also announced that the Philippines had lifted the rice import suspension, creating opportunities to strengthen rice trade cooperation and ensure food security between the two countries.
