Vietnam, Thailand forge closer links for a resilient and sustainable ASEAN
VOV.VN - As political trust between the two countries continues to deepen, relations between Vietnam and Thailand are moving beyond trade cooperation toward deeper integration in regional and global supply chains, from “Made in Vietnam” electronic components increasingly appearing in Thai production lines to investments in green energy and high technology.
Party General Secretary and State President To Lam’s official visit to Thailand from May 27-29, 2026 takes place as both nations have recently upgraded ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The visit is expected to open a new period of cooperation and contribute to a united, resilient and sustainable ASEAN.
According to Vietnam Customs, Vietnam’s exports of computers, electronic products and components to Thailand exceeded US$1 billion during the past four month of 2026, up 29.2% year-on-year and becoming the country’s largest export category to the Thai market.
Vietnam’s manufacturing industry is also gaining ground in Thailand, with Kim Long Motor buses produced at the Chan May-Lang Co Economic Zone in Hue officially entering the Thai market through a distribution agreement with Kijsetthi Mobility.
This is not only a step forward for Vietnam’s automotive industry, but also shows how Vietnam-Thailand economic ties are moving beyond traditional trade ties toward deeper integration in global supply chains.
Thailand is Vietnam’s largest trading partner in ASEAN. Bilateral trade hit US$22.1 billion in 2025, up 9% from 2024. As of April 2026, Thailand had nearly 800 investment projects in Vietnam with total registered capital of US$15.4 billion, ranking eighth among 153 countries and territories investing in the country.
Thai investment is expanding from retail and processing industries into strategic sectors such as renewable energy, petrochemicals and green industry. According to Thai Ambassador to Vietnam Urawadee Sriphiromya, the trend demonstrates the mutual trust and respect between the two countries, as well as the confidence of Thai businesses in Vietnam’s policies to support private-sector development.
These investments contribute to Vietnam’s economic growth, improve living standards in localities hosting Thai-invested projects and also create opportunities for Thailand’s private sector, she added.
Cooperation between the two countries is currently being guided by the “Three Connections” strategy, covering supply chain connectivity, links between businesses and localities, and alignment of sustainable development strategies.
Ambassador Urawadee Sriphiromya said the two sides are working together to shift from traditional mechanical products to high-tech products, particularly semiconductors and other technology industries.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Manh Cuong pointed out that the two countries boast huge potential for cooperation in emerging sectors such as digital transformation, the green economy, the circular economy, renewable energy, innovation and industrial transformation in line with the development strategies of both countries in the coming period.
Alongside economic cooperation, cultural, educational, tourism and people-to-people exchanges between Vietnam and Thailand continue to grow. Vietnam and Thailand currently have around 20 pairs of twinned provinces and cities, while the Vietnamese community in Thailand serves as an important bridge of friendship between the two countries.
Memorial sites dedicated to President Ho Chi Minh in Thailand also contribute to strengthening the traditional friendship between the peoples of the two countries.
Party General Secretary and State President To Lam’s official visit to Thailand, accompanied by his spouse and a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, comes as the two countries move toward the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026, following the upgrade of ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in May 2025.
Assessing the significance of the visit, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Manh Cuong said it is the first visit to an ASEAN country by Party General Secretary and State President To Lam since taking office and takes place shortly after the elevation of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
According to Nguyen Manh Cuong, the upgrade indicates the very high level of political trust between the two countries and their shared determination to develop bilateral ties in a deeper, more substantive and effective manner.
Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow also described the visit as one of the key highlights marking the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations, as well as an opportunity to reaffirm political trust and open a new chapter in Thailand-Vietnam relations.
According to Sihasak Phuangketkeow, as two of ASEAN’s major economies, Vietnam and Thailand should become drivers of closer regional integration and contribute to strengthening ASEAN’s resilience and sustainable development.
From cooperation in production supply chains to strategic energy investment projects and the visit by Vietnam’s Party General Secretary and State President, Vietnam-Thailand relations are continuing to develop in a more substantive and sustainable direction.
The increasingly close ties between the two economies bring practical benefits to the people of both countries and contribute to a united, peaceful and resilient ASEAN with inclusive and sustainable development.
