Thailand continues strengthening Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Vietnam

VOV.VN - Thailand’s Cabinet has approved a draft action plan to implement the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Vietnam over the next six years, opening a framework for broader cooperation across areas ranging from politics and security to economics and people-to-people exchanges.

Under the Cabinet’s decision, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand is authorised to make technical adjustments to the draft without resubmitting it to the Cabinet, provided the revisions do not affect national interests. The foreign minister or an authorised representative will sign the document in line with the ministry’s proposal.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Ploythalay Laksameesaengchan said Thailand and Vietnam upgraded ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2025. The 2026-2031 action plan focuses on three main pillars: Partnership for Sustainable Peace, Partnership for Sustainable Growth and Partnership for a Sustainable Future.

Under the plan, the two sides will strengthen cooperation in areas including politics, security, economics, supply chain connectivity, science and technology, and people-to-people exchanges.

In recent years, Vietnam-Thailand relations have continued to expand across multiple areas, with ties upgraded from a Strategic Partnership in 2013 to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership in 2015, and most recently to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2025.

Thailand and Vietnam are also among each other’s major trading partners within ASEAN. Bilateral trade exceeded US$22.08 billion in 2025, up 9% from 2024.

In investment, Thailand currently ranks eighth among 153 countries and territories investing in Vietnam, with 797 active projects and total registered capital of around US$15.4 billion.

At the invitation of Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and his spouse, Party General Secretary and State President To Lam and his spouse will pay an official visit to Thailand from May 27-29, 2026.

The upcoming visit, together with the 2026-2031 action plan for realizing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, is expected to further deepen Thailand-Vietnam relations and make cooperation more substantive and effective as both nations prepare to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties on August 6, 2026.
