Speaker Seah: Vietnam-Singapore ties entering new phase of accelerated growth
VOV.VN - Singapore Parliament Speaker Seah Kian Peng said Vietnam-Singapore relations are entering a new phase of accelerated growth, with cooperation expanding strongly across multiple sectors shortly after the two countries upgraded ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Speaking during a meeting with Party General Secretary and State President To Lam on May 30 as part of the Vietnamese leader’s State visit to Singapore, Seah described economic, trade and investment cooperation as the ‘glue’ binding the two countries together while also opening new opportunities in emerging sectors.
Welcoming the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, the Singapore Parliament Speaker reaffirmed that Singapore highly values Vietnam’s growing role and international standing both regionally and globally.
He also praised the Vietnamese leader’s keynote address at the Shangri-La Dialogue, saying the messages delivered reflected common regional concerns and aspirations at a time of increasing global uncertainty.
According to Seah, recent economic cooperation outcomes have demonstrated the vitality of bilateral relations. An increasing number of Singaporean businesses are seeking to expand investment and operations in Vietnam, particularly in logistics and e-commerce.
From Singapore’s perspective, the elevation of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March 2025 has created fresh momentum for cooperation across many areas.
Seah said the rapid progress achieved in a short period reflects the long-standing foundation of trust, shared strategic interests and enduring friendship between the two countries.
Party General Secretary and State President To Lam, for his part, agreed with Singapore’s assessment, describing Vietnam-Singapore relations as one of ASEAN’s most effective cooperation models. He underscored that political trust between the two countries continues to strengthen while economic cooperation, investment and connectivity are expanding rapidly.
He highlighted the network of 23 Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Parks (VSIP) as a flagship symbol of successful bilateral cooperation.
According to him, Vietnam and Singapore are also among ASEAN’s leading partners in areas such as digital transformation, science and technology, clean energy, carbon credit exchange, cybersecurity, emerging technologies and financial center development.
Both leaders agreed that similarities in development vision and strategic interests are creating a strong foundation for the two countries to continue supporting one another amid global uncertainties and an evolving international order.
Beyond government-level cooperation, both sides also emphasised the important role of legislative bodies in establishing legal frameworks and ensuring the effective implementation of bilateral agreements.
On this occasion, Parliament Speaker Seah expressed hope that Vietnam would continue supporting Singapore when the country assumes the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2027, contributing together to a united, resilient and sustainable ASEAN.
