PMs of Vietnam and Malaysia hold phone call on US tariff policy
VOV.VN - Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh held a phone call with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on April 6 to exchange views on bilateral relations and assess recent emerging regional and international issues, including the new US tariff policy.

Anwar informed Chinh that Malaysia, in its capacity as ASEAN Chair in 2025, will host the ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Meeting on April 10, to discuss measures to strengthen intra-regional connectivity and cooperation, especially in light of the new US tariff policy.
Chinh shared Vietnam’s efforts in conducting dialogue with the US, including a phone call between Party General Secretary To Lam and US President Donald Trump on April 4, to examine measures to resolve the issue and promote economic and trade cooperation towards fair, sustainable trade that harmonises the interests of all parties.
During the phone call, Chinh said, Vietnam is ready to reduce import tariffs to 0% on goods from the US, and requested reciprocal treatment from the US towards Vietnamese exports. He also announced that Vietnam would send Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc to the US for further, detailed discussions on the matter.
Chinh also welcomed Malaysia’s initiative to organise the ASEAN Economic Ministers' Meeting and affirmed that the Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade would attend the event.
Meanwhile, Anwar told Chinh that Malaysia and many countries in the region highly appreciated the phone call between General Secretary To Lam and President Donald Trump, and voiced support for Vietnam’s approach to addressing this issue.
The Malaysian Prime Minister also informed his Vietnamese counterpart on several initiatives that Malaysia is undertaking as ASEAN Chair to address the situation in Myanmar, including a visit to Myanmar by the Malaysian Foreign Minister on April 5. He emphasized Malaysia’s policy of promoting dialogue and ensuring unity and consensus in addressing the Myanmar issue.
Chinh welcomed Malaysia’s efforts as ASEAN Chair, especially its effective support, responsible attitude, and active role in promoting ASEAN’s collective action to help Myanmar overcome the recent 7.7 magnitude earthquake disaster. He shared Vietnam’s prompt assistance to Myanmar, including dispatching over 100 rescue personnel along with equipment, medical supplies, and medicine, and providing US$300,000 in emergency aid.
He affirmed that Vietnam would continue to actively support Malaysia and other ASEAN members, and is willing to act as a mediator to foster dialogue and national reconciliation in Myanmar.
Both the Prime Ministers agreed to maintain communication, strengthen mutual trust, and coordinate measures to deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries, contributing to peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and the rest of the world.
