Party leader To Lam meets with Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye

VOV.VN - Party General Secretary To Lam of Vietnam met with President Evariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi, who was on an official visit to Vietnam, in Hanoi on April 4.

To Lam praised Burundi’s achievements under President Ndayishimiye’s leadership, especially in political stability and socio-economic development. He affirmed that Vietnam values its friendship and cooperation with African nations, including Burundi, and seeks to advance bilateral cooperation in key sectors such as investment, agriculture, mining, technology, digital transformation, and leadership training.

He also encouraged Burundi to create favourable conditions for Viettel’s telecommunications joint venture Lumitel to operate successfully in the country.

Ndayishimiye expressed his admiration for Vietnam’s dynamic development and sought to learn from its experience in rapid and sustainable growth. He emphasized Burundi’s interest in expanding cooperation with Vietnam, particularly in investment, agriculture, and education.

Both leaders agreed to enhance high-level exchanges and multi-channel communication to reinforce political trust and create new momentum for cooperation. They encouraged deeper exchanges and interactions between the two ruling parties - the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) and the National Council for the Defense of Democracy – Forces for the Defence of Democracy (CNDD-FDD), as well as between youth and women’s organizations, to strengthen mutual understanding and friendship, particularly among younger generations.

They welcomed the signing of several agreements during the visit and urged relevant agencies from both countries to accelerate negotiations to finalise more agreements, thereby improving the legal framework for bilateral cooperation.

Regarding multilateral cooperation, the two leaders expressed satisfaction of the close coordination and mutual support at international forums. They reaffirmed their commitment to continued cooperation, particularly at the United Nations, the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), and regional organisations such as ASEAN and the African Union.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to resolving disputes peacefully, based on international law, ensuring regional stability and security.

To Lam requested that Burundi support ASEAN’s position on peacefully resolving maritime disputes based on respect for international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982), and ASEAN’s efforts to maintain the East Sea as a region of peace, stability, cooperation, and sustainable development.

Ndayishimiye extended a formal invitation to To Lam to visit Burundi in the near future. To Lam thanked the guest for the invitation and said the two countries’ Foreign Ministries would coordinate to determine a suitable time for the visit.

The same day, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with the visiting Burundian President who reaffirmed Burundi’s commitment to strengthening and expanding cooperation with Vietnam in areas such as investment, agriculture, mining, technology, and digital transformation.

Chinh welcomed Ndayishimiye’s visit and noted that Vietnam’s cooperation with African countries, including Burundi, has grown steadily. He emphasized Vietnam is eager to deepen its economic engagement with Africa, a region where it has not yet fully explored opportunities, particularly in agriculture, industry, trade, energy, mining, digital transformation, green and energy transitions.

The Prime Minister stressed the importance of cooperation between the two countries, especially in the face of global uncertainties. He highlighted the need for multilateralism and international solidarity to overcome challenges, referencing the global impact of the policies like President Donald Trump’s recent reciprocal tariff policy.

He expressed his belief that Ndayishimiye’s visit would further strengthen bilateral ties and that the two countries would work together to overcome difficulties, promote development and improve the quality of life for their people.

President Evariste Ndayishimiye and his spouse arrived in Hanoi on April 3 for a four-day official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of President Luong Cuong and his spouse.
