Burundi President Ndayishimiye warmly welcomed in Hanoi on official visit

VOV.VN - President Luong Cuong and his spouse hosted a welcoming ceremony in Hanoi on April 4 morning for President of Burundi Evariste Ndayishimiye and his spouse who arrived in Hanoi on April 3 evening for an official visit to Vietnam.

After the convoy carrying Ndayishimiye and his entourage moved into the Presidential palace, Cuong invited his distinguished guest to step onto the podium of honour for the welcoming ceremony.

As the national anthems of both countries were played, both host and guest rendered the flag salute and then reviewed the guard of honour of the Vietnam People’s Army.

Following the welcoming ceremony, both presidents held talks to review bilateral cooperation and propose future directions. They also witnessed the signing of several cooperation documents between the two countries’ ministries and agencies.

During the April 3-6 visit, President Ndayishimiye is expected to meet with Party General Secretary To Lam Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

Burundi is a country in East Africa. Vietnam and Burundi established diplomatic relations in 1975. The two sides have maintained a good friendship and cooperative relationship through both State and Party channels.

President Ndayishimiye has been in office since 2020. He admires Vietnam’s history of national independence struggles and appreciates the country’s significant achievements in national construction and development, viewing Vietnam as a model for other developing nations.

Despite bilateral trade turnover reaching only over US$2 million in 2024, Vietnam and Burundi hold great potential for cooperation. Vietnam mainly exports machinery, equipment, spare parts, computers, and components to Burundi, while importing ores, some minerals, and animal feed from Burundi.

A highlight of bilateral cooperation is the investment project of the Military Industry and Telecoms Group (Viettel) in the Burundian market. Viettel began investing in a joint venture in 2013 later named Lumitel, in which Viettel holds 85% of charter capital.

After 10 years of operation, Lumitel is currently the leading telecommunications provider in Burundi and one of the largest contributors to the Burundian government’s budget.

Moreover, with the launch of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in 2021, Vietnam’s trade with the African market is expected to significantly increase in the near future.
