Party leader To Lam and US President Donald Trump hold phone talks over tariff
VOV.VN - Vietnamese Party General Secretary To Lam held a phone call with US President Donald Trump regarding Vietnam-US relations, including the new US reciprocal tariff to be imposed on Vietnamese commodities to be exported into the United States.

To Lam highly valued the discussion, during which the two leaders reaffirmed their desire to continue strengthening Vietnam – US cooperation for mutual benefit and to contribute to peace, stability, and development in the region and the wider world. Both leaders held that relations between the two countries are developing well across various fields.
The two leaders also exchanged measures to further promote trade cooperation between Vietnam and the US. To Lam affirmed that Vietnam is willing to negotiate with the US to bring import tariffs on US goods to 0%. At the same time, he proposed that the US apply the same tariff policy to Vietnamese imports, and that Vietnam continue importing more goods from the US, as well as encouraging and facilitating US companies to invest more in Vietnam.
The two leaders agreed to work together to soon sign a bilateral agreement to formalize these commitments.
On this occasion, To Lam extended a formal invitation to Trump and the First Lady to visit Vietnam again soon. Trump gladly accepted the invitation and expressed his eagerness to meet the Vietnamese Party leader. The US President also asked To Lam to convey his warm greetings to the Vietnamese leaders and people.
Sharing on his Truth Social social media platform, Trump described his phone talks with the Vietnmaese leader as productive.
“Just had a very productive call with To Lam, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, who told me that Vietnam wants to cut their tariffs down to ZERO if they are able to make an agreement with the US,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that he looked forward to a meeting “in the near future”.
