Vietnam requests US to temporarily suspend new tariff imposition for negotiation
VOV.VN - The government of Vietnam has requested that the United States temporarily suspend the imposition of the newly unveiled reciprocal tariff on Vietnamese commodities exported into the United States for 1 to 3 months to allow for negotiations, to ensure fairness and mutual benefit for both sides.

Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc was speaking after a meeting in Hanoi on April 4 with representatives from various ministries, agencies, diplomatic agencies, and craft associations and major businesses such as Samsung Vietnam and SOVICO Group.
The meeting was held to discuss solutions to deal with the reciprocal tariff to be imposed on Vietnamese commodities exported to the United State that the Trump administration has recently announced.
Phoc affirmed Vietnam's willingness to negotiate and seek common ground with the United States. He also advised Vietnamese businesses exporting to the US market to maintain their prices while awaiting the results of the negotiations. In addition, he urged businesses to proactively implement suitable and effective measures to retain this large, lucrative market.
According to the Deputy PM, Vietnam is always proactive and open to working closely with the United States to negotiate tax matters fairly, combat the issue of transshipment, and promote mutually beneficial trade. The government recently issued Decree No. 73/2025/ND-CP, reducing various tax rates on US imports into Vietnam.
Furthermore, Vietnam continues to encourage contracts to purchase US products, such as Boeing aircraft and LNG, while creating favourable conditions for US firms to invest, produce, and do business in the country.
The government will continue to implement solutions to enhance the purchase of US raw materials and equipment, and seek to expand cooperation with the United States in science, technology, and digital transformation, he affirmed.
The Deputy PM requested the American Chamber of Commerce in the United States and the US-ASEAN Business Council to convey the goodwill of the Vietnamese government and business community to the Trump administration, aiming for effective negotiations that will contribute to strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries.
The Customs Department reported that Vietnam exported goods worth US$119.5 billion to the United States and imported US$$15.1 billion from the market last year
At the meeting, representatives from various industries and businesses expressed concerns over the US imposing tariffs on goods from Vietnam. However, they emphasized that the United States is a crucial and leading market. They assured that they are ready to increase US imports and provide evidence to demonstrate the origin and capacity of products to support the negotiation process.
They pledged to continue cooperating actively with the government to address the challenges ahead.
Meanwhile, leaders from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Ministry of Industry and Trade, State Bank, Ministry of Science and Technology, and Ministry of Finance affirmed that Vietnam will press ahead with dialogues. They also pledged to review and consider removing technical barriers and adjusting tariffs for certain product groups and industries.
