Party General Secretary To Lam hosts Lao leader Thongloun Sisoulith
VOV.VN - General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam To Lam on September 2 met with Lao General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith, who came to Hanoi for Vietnam’s 80th Anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day (September 2, 1945 – 2025).

He welcomed the Lao delegation’s participation which he said reflects the special, enduring, and rare solidarity between the two Parties and countries. He highlighted that the participation of Lao People’s Army soldiers in the parade alongside the Vietnamese army and people provides immense encouragement to Vietnam.
He affirmed that throughout their revolutionary history, every victory of the Vietnamese people has been closely linked with the sincere and devoted support of the Party, State, and people of Laos. Vietnam always deeply treasures this invaluable assistance, from the years of resistance to the current cause of national construction, defence and development. It will do its utmost alongside Laos to preserve, nurture, and further strengthen the special Vietnam–Laos relationship.
On this occasion, General Secretary Lam also expressed appreciation for the decision of the Lao Party and State to recognise the Truong Son–Ho Chi Minh Road in Laos as a national historical relic. This recognition, he said, holds special significance in preserving and promoting historical value, demonstrating respect and honouring the solidarity between the armies and peoples of the two countries, and commemorating the thousands of Vietnamese and Lao soldiers and youth volunteers who sacrificed along this legendary route. It also serves as a “red landmark” for educating future generations about revolutionary traditions, patriotism, and unity.
For his part, General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith warmly congratulated Vietnam on this milestone anniversary and affirmed that the success of the August Revolution and the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945 provided strong motivation for Laos’ national liberation struggle and inspired global movements for peace and freedom.
He shared that, in the spirit of Vietnam’s celebrations, Laos held its own commemorative ceremony for Vietnam’s 80th National Day, with over 1,500 delegates, including senior leaders and representatives from various Lao ministries and organisations. He emphasised that Vietnam’s achievements over the past 80 years are also shared accomplishments of the two countries, noting the profound patriotic spirit he witnessed among the Vietnamese people during the recent celebrations.
General Secretary Sisoulith lauded Vietnam’s remarkable and comprehensive successes under the clear-sighted leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam over the past 95 years, particularly in the 80 years of national construction. These achievements include reforms, political stability, rapid and sustainable economic development, expanded foreign relations, and growing regional and international influence. He called these achievements valuable lessons for Laos in its efforts to develop and build the country.
Both host and guest exchanged updates on the situation of their respective Parties and countries, highlighting the special significance of 2025 as the final year of their Party terms, leading up to the Party Congresses in early 2026. They agreed to continue close coordination and share experiences in preparing for these congresses to ensure their successful organisation.
The two leaders engaged in candid discussions on directions and measures to promote bilateral cooperation. They stressed that amid complex developments globally and regionally, the two countries need to strengthen consultations, share experience, and support each other in overcoming challenges. Beyond political, defence, and security cooperation, they agreed to elevate economic collaboration, increase bilateral trade, strengthen infrastructure connectivity, and focus on strategic projects to open a new, effective, and practical phase of cooperation benefiting both countries.
They expressed satisfaction with the progress of Vietnamese investments in Laos across sectors such as energy, agriculture, telecommunications, and infrastructure, noting that these projects are bringing tangible benefits. Both sides are also coordinating strategic infrastructure projects, including transport and energy connectivity, to ensure sustainable economic and trade development aligned with regional and international integration.
The two leaders affirmed continued coordination on international positions, expanded integration, and security to serve the development and interests of the peoples of both countries. Building on their precious traditional ties, Vietnam and Laos will strengthen cooperation in international integration for peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and globally, they said.
