Party chief To Lam to attend Gaza Peace Council opening in United States
VOV.VN - General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee To Lam will pay a working visit to the United States from February 18 to 2 to attend the inaugural meeting of the Gaza Peace Council.
The invitation has been extended by US President Donald Trump, founder of the Gaza Peace Council. In a letter dated January 16, 2026, President Trump invited To Lam and Vietnam to join the Council as a founding member, alongside the international community, in promoting a sustainable peace solution to the Israel–Palestine conflict in the Gaza Strip.
In his response, the Party leader accepted the invitation and affirmed Vietnam’s readiness to participate as a founding member of the Council, pledging to work with the United States and other countries to contribute to a comprehensive and long-term solution to the Middle East peace process, including the establishment of a Palestinian state coexisting peacefully alongside Israel.
In recent years, the Middle East has remained one of the world’s most complex and persistent conflict zones, particularly the fighting between Israel and Palestinian forces in Gaza, which has resulted in severe humanitarian, economic and security consequences. Despite extensive international mediation efforts, no sustainable mechanism has yet succeeded in both ending hostilities and organising comprehensive post-conflict reconstruction.
On September 30, 2025, nearly two years after the outbreak of fighting between Israel and Hamas that triggered one of the most severe humanitarian crises in modern Palestinian history, President Trump proposed a 20-point Peace Plan. On October 9, 2025, Israel and Hamas agreed to a “phase one” ceasefire under the plan.
On November 17, 2025, the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 2803, endorsing the Peace Plan, welcoming the establishment of the Gaza Peace Council as a transitional mechanism to manage reconstruction in the Gaza Strip, and authorising a civilian and security presence in Gaza until December 31, 2027.
On January 22, 2026, President Donald Trump presided over the signing ceremony of the Peace Council Charter in Davos, Switzerland. The United States is expected to host the first leadership conference and a reconstruction fundraising meeting for Gaza on February 19, 2026.
The Peace Plan and the Gaza Peace Council initiative have been described as the most viable framework proposed since the conflict escalated in October 2023, providing a platform for dialogue and negotiations toward a sustainable regional settlement. Most invited countries have accepted participation as founding members, signaling political support, though specific commitments and contributions remain under discussion.
Vietnam sent a delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son to attend the Charter signing ceremony on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos at the invitation of President Trump.
