Party chief seeks broader security, defence cooperation with Russia
VOV.VN - Party chief To Lam on December 9 urged broader security and defence cooperation with Russia, saying the sector is crucial for strengthening strategic trust between the two countries as Vietnam pursues an independent and diversified foreign policy.
During a meeting in Hanoi with Russia’s Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu, Party leader Lam affirmed Vietnam continues to value its traditional ties with Moscow and sees the comprehensive strategic partnership with Russia as one of its priorities.
He called on both sides to step up the implementation of high-level agreements and expand cooperation into specific areas including countering transnational crime, anti-terrorism efforts, cybersecurity, non-traditional security, strategic information exchange, and training of specialist forces. He also encouraged stronger collaboration in defence support programmes.
Beyond security and defence, the Party leader proposed expanding economic and trade cooperation, particularly in energy, oil and gas, agriculture, machinery manufacturing and high-tech industries. He also highlighted the need to deepen ties between local governments, enterprises and business associations, and to boost cultural exchanges, tourism, academic cooperation and human-resource training.
He said Vietnam and Russia should increase consultation and experience-sharing to maintain stability and sustainable development amid complex global conditions. Vietnam, he added, is ready to serve as a bridge to support Russia in strengthening cooperation with ASEAN and other regional partners.
For his part, Shoigu, who previously served as Russia’s Defence Minister, said Moscow views Vietnam as a key partner in the Asia-Pacific and supports Vietnam’s independent foreign policy. He called for more frequent strategic dialogue between specialist agencies and expanded cooperation programmes in security training and responses to non-traditional threats.
Both sides exchanged greetings from senior leaders, reaffirming their commitment to the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Russia.
