New Zealand considers Vietnam an important partner in region

VOV.VN - New Zealand has identified Vietnam as one of its most important partners in the region, Ambassador Caroline Beresford told the press ahead of Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s official visit to Vietnam from February 25-28.

Luxon, who will be accompanied by leaders of more than 20 businesses seeking to strengthen and expand ties with their Vietnamese counterparts, will also participate in the second ASEAN Future Forum to get underway in Hanoi on this occasion.

The PM has an ambitious agenda for developing relations with Southeast Asia, and Vietnam is recognized as one of New Zealand’s key partners in the region, said the ambassador.

Therefore, she said, Luxon’s visit, along with a large trade delegation, is not only to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries but also to solidify and expand cooperation with an important partner like Vietnam in today's increasingly volatile world.

The diplomat revealed that during Luxon’s visit, New Zealand enterprises would sign cooperation agreements with their Vietnamese counterparts in both traditional areas such as education, climate change mitigation, agriculture, and sustainable development, as well as new sectors aimed at creating added value and fostering economic growth for both sides.

She emphasized that the most effective way for the two countries to benefit from their partnership is to identify areas where they can complement each other.

In her opinion, New Zealand’s economy remains heavily dependent on agriculture, and the country has adopted modern technologies to enhance both productivity and the quality of its agricultural products.

As individual incomes in Vietnam continue to rise, Beresford believed, New Zealand brands and products would increasingly find a strong market in Vietnam.

Meanwhile, Vietnam produces agricultural goods that New Zealand demands, making it essential for both countries to continue expanding cooperation in this sector.

Vietnam has already opened its market to several New Zealand agricultural products, including fresh potatoes, frozen beef, kiwi fruit, apples, pumpkins, and strawberries.

Conversely, New Zealand has granted import permits for Vietnamese mangoes, dragon fruit, rambutans, lemons, and pomelos.

New Zealand is considering opening its market for Vietnamese honey, pears, venison, and deer meat, while Vietnam has proposed market access for longans, lychees, and flowers.

The diplomat also noted that 80% of New Zealand’s current energy consumption comes from renewable sources. As a result, her country has developed advanced technologies in sustainable and renewable energy, which it is ready to share with Vietnam as it transitions towards a greater reliance on renewable energy.

To commemorate 50 years of diplomatic ties in June 2025, she said, the Embassy would host film screenings in Hanoi to showcase the country, its people, and indigenous culture, alongside conferences on business and culture.

Regarding the second ASEAN Future Forum, the Ambassador expressed New Zealand’s strong support and gratitude to Vietnam for initiating this platform to discuss the bloc’s future.

She emphasized that in an environment with multiple threats to regional order, New Zealand considers ASEAN’s central role as the key to maintaining stability and prosperity for all people in the region, and it supports its endeavour.
