Sulyok and his entourage were welcomed at Noi Bai International Airport by Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son, Vietnamese Ambassador to Hungary Bui Le Thai, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Anh Tuan.

This is the first trip to Vietnam by a Hungarian head of state in 11 years, and it coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Vietnam and Hungary established diplomatic ties on February 3, 1950, and elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership in September 2018. In 2024, bilateral trade turnover reached US$932 million, up nearly 10% from the previous year.

Hungary currently has 21 active FDI projects in Vietnam, with a total registered capital of US$50.66 million, ranking 52nd out of 149 countries and territories investing in the country.

The Vietnamese community in Hungary numbers around 6,000 people, mainly residing in Budapest. Notably, Hungary offers 200 scholarships annually to Vietnamese students for undergraduate and postgraduate studies - the highest number granted by any Central and Eastern European country.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Hungary Bui Le Thai described the visit as a significant milestone that opens up new opportunities for bilateral cooperation within the Vietnam–Hungary Comprehensive Partnership. The visit demonstrates the strong political will of both countries’ top leaders to deepen and enhance the 2018 partnership, thereby fostering mutual understanding.

Meanwhile, Hungarian Ambassador to Vietnam Tibor Baloghdi emphasised that the diplomatic relationship between Hungary and Vietnam is built on a solid foundation of mutual respect, cooperation, and a long-standing historical bond. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1950, Hungary has consistently supported Vietnam in various fields.

Today, he said, the two countries are important partners to each other, and Hungary greatly values its relationship with Vietnam.

President Tamas Sulyok of Hungary to begin Vietnam visit today
