President Tamas Sulyok of Hungary to begin Vietnam visit today
VOV.VN - Hungarian President Tamas Sulyok and his spouse are scheduled to begin a three-day official visit to Vietnam on May 27 at the invitation of President Luong Cuong.

Vietnam and Hungary established diplomatic relations in February 1950. Since then, the bilateral relationship has steadily developed, achieving significant milestones based on deep political trust, mutual understanding, and genuine affection. Hungary remains one of Vietnam’s most important partners in Central and Eastern Europe.
During the Hungary visit in 2018 by the then Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, the two countries elevated their ties to a Comprehensive Partnership - the first of its kind between Vietnam and a country in Central and Eastern Europe. The partnership has since been strengthened through high-level visits, notably those by Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in January 2024 and Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto in March 2025, which have boosted cooperation across various fields.
The two countries maintain effective cooperation mechanisms, such as deputy foreign minister-level political consultations and the Vietnam–Hungary Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation. There are also vibrant exchanges in culture, sports, tourism, and people-to-people interactions.
Bilateral trade continues to grow, reaching nearly US$1 billion in 2024, representing a year-on-year rise of 17%. Hungarian businesses are expanding their presence in Vietnam in areas such as pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, agriculture, and defense industries.
Other sectors, including health care, justice, and the environment, have also seen positive progress.
At multilateral forums like the UN, ASEM, and ASEAN-EU, the two sides coordinate closely. Notably, during Hungary’s EU Council Presidency in the second half of 2024, it strongly supported Vietnam’s efforts to push for the ratification of the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) and advocated for the removal of the EU’s “yellow card” on Vietnamese seafood.
In 2025, both Vietnam and Hungary will organise various activities to celebrate the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.
