HCM City get-together marks Cuba’s Liberation Day

VOV.VN - The Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organisations held a get-together on January 15 celebrating the 65th anniversary of Cuba’s Triumph of the Revolution or Liberation Day (January 1).

In her address, Truong Thi Hien, chairwoman of the Vietnam – Cuba Friendship Association of Ho Chi Minh City, reviewed major developments of bilateral relations, noting after more than half a century of ups and downs, the relationship of solidarity, traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Cuba has been continuously strengthened and developed in all fields of politics, economics and trade. national defense - security, agriculture, construction, education, health care, biotechnology, transportation, and sports. Two-way trade turnover has grown encouragingly, hitting US$500 million last year.

According to Hien, 2023 was special year, marking 70 years of Cuban people’s attack on the Moncada barracks and 50 years of Cuban leader Fidel Castro’s trip to Vietnam’s liberated zone in Quang Tri province. During the year, a score of activities were held in both Vietnam and Cuba, helping to consolidate and develop the cooperative relationship between the two countries.

She recalled major activities that the Vietnam – Cuba Friendship Association of Ho Chi Minh City has hosted over the years, and affirmed that the association would continue to coordinate closely with the Consulate General of Cuba in the city to organize more friendly, cultural and art events in 2024 and beyond.

Cuban Consul General Ariadne Feo Labrada emphasized that over the years Cuba and Vietnam have constituted a special relationship, yielding important results in cooperation, noting Cuba particularly began to cooperate with Ho Chi Minh City in the field of health care.

Cuba, one of the countries with the best primary health care systems in the world, hopes to continue to cooperate and realize a cooperation agreement to support Ho Chi Minh City in this field, said the diplomat.

She affirmed that Cuba would continue its efforts to restore and develop economic, trade and investment relations with Vietnam, as well as to promote youth exchanges in the coming time as part of their senior leaders’ political commitment.
