Cuba to hold national mourning for late Vietnamese Party leader
VOV.VN - Cuban President Miguel Díaz Canel-Bermúdez has decided to declare July 22 as day of national mourning to pay tribute to Vietnamese Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong who passed away on July 19.
The day of national mourning will last from 6:00 a.m. till midnight, according to the decision published on Granma, the mouthpiece of the Cuban Communist Party.
Cuba will officially mourn Trong on July 21, from 6:00 a.m. till midnight in memory of the late Vietnamese Party leader.
“The Cuban people are deeply saddened to hear that comrade Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, has passed away,” says the decision.
“In his long and rich political career, comrade Nguyen Phu Trong is one of the most prominent figures in promoting the relationship of brotherly friendship and mutual trust between the two Parties, two National Assemblies, two Governments and peoples of Cuba and Vietnam.”
During the national mourning period, public performances and festival activities will be postponed or canceled.
On July 19 (local time) deputies to the National Assembly of the Cuban People’s Power observed a minute of silence to commemorate General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee Raúl Castro Ruz and Cuban President sent letters of condolence to Vietnamese President To Lam.
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has visited Cuba five times, and he is also the only Vietnamese leader to have visited Cuba five times in different positions. He last paid a working trip to the Caribbean nation from March 28-30, 2018 at the invitation of First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee Raúl Castro Ruz.
