Australia backs Vietnam’s CPTPP chairmanship and APEC 2027 hosting
VOV.VN - Australia reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Vietnam’s development goals and backed the country’s upcoming role as Chair of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in 2026 as well as its hosting of the APEC forum in 2027.
The message was delivered by Australia’s Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Jan Adams during a meeting with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on May 30, reflecting the growing trust within the Vietnam–Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Adams spoke highly of Vietnam’s recent development achievements and said she was impressed by the keynote address delivered by Vietnam’s Party General Secretary and State President To Lam at the Shangri-La Dialogue, particularly his proposals on strengthening preventive diplomacy to help maintain peace and stability in the region.
In addition to reaffirming Australia’s readiness to accompany Vietnam in its development agenda, Adams expressed Canberra’s desire to further advance bilateral cooperation mechanisms. She invited Trung to visit Australia soon and co-chair the 8th Vietnam–Australia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in the near future.
For his part, Trung welcomed the positive and substantive progress in the Vietnam–Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, highlighting the effective coordination between the two Foreign Ministries at both bilateral and multilateral levels.
He called on the two sides to continue close coordination in preparing for high-level exchanges, accelerate the implementation of existing commitments, and strengthen cooperation in Mekong subregional development. He also expressed hope that Australian leaders would attend the 3rd ASEAN Future Forum, scheduled to take place in Vietnam this June.
Both sides noted that the Action Plan for implementing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for 2024–2027 was progressing on schedule and agreed to further deepen economic ties, with the goal of raising bilateral trade turnover to US$20 billion in the coming years.
Beyond traditional areas of cooperation, Vietnam and Australia also agreed to expand collaboration in high-growth sectors such as technology, strategic minerals, the digital economy and innovation.
The two countries reaffirmed their commitment to supporting each other at regional and international forums, contributing to ASEAN centrality while promoting dialogue, cooperation, peace, stability and sustainable development in the region.
