ASEAN–UK partnership set for strategic upgrade with new action plan

VOV.VN - Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dang Hoang Giang, head of ASEAN SOM of Vietnam, received UK Ambassador to Vietnam Iain Frew on March 24 to discuss orientations for enhancing ASEAN–UK cooperation and Vietnam–UK bilateral relations in the new phase.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to advancing ASEAN–UK relations in a strong, comprehensive, long-term and strategic manner, aligned with evolving cooperation demands and a rapidly changing global context. They noted significant progress in ASEAN–UK cooperation, particularly the 98.9% implementation rate of the ASEAN–UK Plan of Action for 2022–2026.

They held that the year 2026 also marks the fifth anniversary of the ASEAN–UK Dialogue Partnership, providing fresh momentum to elevate ties.

Deputy Minister Giang emphasised that, as the country coordinator for ASEAN–UK relations for the 2024–2027 period, Vietnam would continue to work closely with the UK to further shape and deepen the partnership. The country is also actively coordinating efforts to develop the ASEAN–UK Plan of Action for 2027–2031, with a focus on priority areas including economic and financial cooperation, green transition, sustainable development, climate change response, innovation and maritime cooperation.

On bilateral relations, the Deputy Minister appreciated the UK’s support for Vietnam, particularly in developing an international financial centre, and called for continued cooperation and experience-sharing in clean energy transition.

Ambassador Frew commended Vietnam’s coordinating role in ASEAN–UK relations and its increasingly proactive contributions within ASEAN and the international arena. He reaffirmed the UK’s readiness to work closely with Vietnam to effectively implement the priority areas of cooperation identified by both sides.
