VOV.VN - Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang held talks on August 1 with John Lee Ka-chiu, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (China), who is on an official visit to Vietnam from July 31 to August 2.

The talks saw Deputy PM Tran Luu Quang welcome the Hong Kong Chief Executive’s first official visit to the nation which, he hoped would be an important milestone and make practical contributions to promoting mutually beneficial co-operation between Vietnam and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Deputy PM Quang congratulate Hong Kong on the tremendous achievements recorded under the leadership of the Special Administrative Region government, along with the attention and support given by the Chinese Government, thereby helping the city to continue to consolidate and enhance its position as a leading economic, financial, commercial, scientific, and technological hub in the region and the world.

The Vietnamese Government always supports and encourages ministries, sectors, and localities to promote and deepen friendly exchanges and all-around ties with Hong Kong.

In response, Lee affirmed that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government attaches great importance to the mutually-beneficial ties relationship with Vietnam and stands ready to effectively boost areas of co-operation between the two sides, thereby bringing about practical benefits to the people and business communities of both sides.

Host and guest showed their elation at the strong developments and positive results achieved in the mutual relationship in recent times, in which economic - trade, investment, and tourism collaboration continues to be a bright spot.

Vietnam is currently Hong Kong's second largest trading partner in ASEAN and their seventh largest trading partner globally. In contrast Hong Kong represents the nation’s seventh largest trading partner and fifth largest foreign direct investment (FDI) investor.

The two sides agreed to continue to exploit and effectively utilise each other’s opportunities, potential, and advantages, whilst also expanding co-operation and realising the goal of mutual benefit and development.

Deputy PM Quang suggested that both sides should strive to intensify delegation exchanges at all levels and sectors, improve the overall quality and effectiveness of ties in key areas such as economics, trade, investment, finance, tourism, culture, education, science and technology, law enforcement, and citizen protection.

He therefore welcomed Hong Kong corporations and enterprises to actively become involved in the Vietnamese market, implement high-quality investment projects, and increase the import popular Vietnamese goods.

He suggested that the Special Administrative Region government continue to pay attention to and work to create more favourable conditions for the Vietnamese community in Hong Kong to live, study, and work stably. This is as well as granting more scholarships to Vietnamese students and co-ordinating efforts to prevent illegal activities.

The Deputy PM also proposed the two sides bolster linkages in multilateral mechanisms and forums, especially Hong Kong's support and close collaboration when Vietnam hosts APEC Year 2027.

Agreeing with Deputy PM Quang, the Hong Kong Chief Executive suggested that the two sides maintain exchanges and contacts at high and all levels, welcoming Vietnam to send representatives to attend the ninth Belt and Road Summit which will be held in Hong Kong.

He also proposed offering optimal conditions for Hong Kong businesses as they seek to expand investment co-operation in the Vietnamese market; enhance exchanges on co-operation in the fields of finance, trade, investment, transport services, digital economy, green economy, and science and technology; and boost Hong Kong's role as a "super connector", making economic ties between the two sides develop more effectively and substantially. He expressed his hopes that the two sides will further boost people-to-people exchanges, tourism, and education, whilst they also stand ready to boost co-ordination at multilateral forums.

At the meeting, Lee invited Deputy PM Quang to visit Hong Kong at an appropriate time.

Following the talks, Deputy PM Quang and Lee witnessed the handover ceremony of co-operation documents between agencies and enterprises of Vietnam and Hong Kong in the fields of finance, trade, investment, and aviation.
