Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam boost parliamentary cooperation

VOV.VN - Vu Hai Ha, chairman of the National Assembly (NA)'s Foreign Affairs Committee, chaired an online meeting on November 8 with the Foreign Affairs Committees of Laos and Cambodian NAs regarding preparations for the first Parliamentary Summit of the three countries, which is set to take place in the Lao capital of Vientiane in December.

The preparatory meeting focused on discussing and offering opinions on procedures, the expected programme on the conference and activities within the framework of the agenda. Accordingly, along with the opening and closing sessions, the conference will conduct two plenary sessions.

There will be sessions which take place within the summit, with the Foreign Affairs Committee session focusing on the topic "Strengthening the role of the NAs of the three countries of Cambodia - Laos - Vietnam in promoting cooperation, partnership, solidarity and prosperity".

The session on economic and socio-cultural co-operation aims to focus on strengthening parliamentary ties whilst enhancing the connection of the economies of the three nations towards meeting sustainable and inclusive development goals.

The session on defence and security issues will therefore concentrate on intensifying the supervisory role of the parliaments of all sides in a bid to ensure peace and stability and the session of the Drafting Committee.

Delegates discussed and gave their opinions on technical issues, expertise, and how to organise the Friendship Bicycle Race aimed at enhancing exchange activities, friendship, and intimacy among participating delegates.

According to the Joint Declaration of the Presidents of the NAs of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos (CLV) signed on November 20, 2022 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the CLV Parliamentary Summit aims to strengthen the friendship, solidarity, and comprehensive co-operation among the three countries. Indeed, there will be a particular focus on socio-economic development, defence-security ties, and people’s exchange, for the cause of sustainable development of the three countries and the region as a whole.

The mechanism will therefore accelerate and monitor the implementation of agreements, action programmes and co-operation projects reached by the three Governments, as well as of multilateral agreements to which the three countries are members. This includes promoting the sharing and exchange of information, experience, and good practices in performing the functions and tasks of the three NAs; allocating budgets and discussing ways to mobilise capital from partners in and outside the CLV region to carry out programmes and projects in the development triangle and other fields of co-operation.

The CLV Parliamentary Summit will be held every two years under the rotational chair of the leaders of the three NAs in alphabet order.
