Vietnam’s consumer price index rises by 3.25% in 2023
VOV.VN - Vietnam recorded annual growth of 3.25% in the 2023 consumer price index (CPI), while core inflation increased by 4.16%, the General Statistics Office (GSO) said on December 29.
In December alone, CPI edged up slightly by 0.12% month on month and 3.58% year on year. While one of the 10 categories of main consumer goods and services witnessed month-on-month price declines, nine experienced higher prices.
Pointing out some of the main contributors to CPI growth, the GSO said that the price of education group grew by 7.44%, while the housing and construction materials group climbed up 6.58%.
Elsewhere, rice prices fluctuated in line with export prices and market demand to rise by 6.77% from 2022, whilst foodstuff prices also inched up by 2.33%.
Moreover, the increase in electricity and the beverage and cigarette prices, up 4.86% and 3.29%, respectively, also fueled the rise of CPI.
There are also several factors which have curbed the CPI uptrend, including petrol and oil prices down by 11.02%, gas prices down by 6.94%, and prices of postal and telecommunications services which have declined by 0.81% as a result of lower mobile phone prices.
To actively cope with surging inflationary pressure, the Government has ordered ministries, sectors, and localities to issue many timely policies and implement concerted measures aimed at minimising adverse impacts on socio-economic development.
