Vietnam’s aquatic exports to Japan rebound strongly
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s seafood exports to Japan have shown a strong recovery, bringing in nearly US$1.6 billion in the period from January to November this year, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).
VASEP reported that Japan has emerged as a key growth market for the aquatic industry, with export value rising 11% year on year during January–November. In November alone, shipments totaled US$161 million, up 9%. With this momentum, export turnover to Japan is on track to set a new annual record this year.
The strong rebound reflects renewed demand in Japan and reinforces the growing presence of Vietnamese seafood in a market renowned for its stringent quality standards.
VASEP highlighted that a shift in export structure has been central to this recovery. Shrimp, Vietnam’s strategic product, continued to increase in both volume and value, signaling steady demand for higher-quality items. Squid and octopus also recorded impressive growth, while tra (pangasius) and basa exports soared by nearly 70%.
In addition to rising volumes, export prices for Vietnamese seafood in Japan have remained more stable compared to the US and China, another factor supporting the recovery.
Statistics from Japan Customs shows that Vietnam is now the third-largest seafood supplier to Japan, accounting for 7.4% of the country’s total imports. Conversely, Japan is one of Vietnam’s top three export markets, contributing roughly 15% of the industry’s total export value.
This upward trend is projected to continue into 2026. As year-end demand peaks in Japan, many analysts predict that Vietnam’s seafood export earnings for 2025 could surpass the previous record of US$1.7 billion set in 2022.
In addition, trade agreements such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and Vietnam–Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (VJEPA) will continue to support businesses through preferential tariffs and streamlined procedures, enabling deeper integration into Japan’s supply chain.
