Vietnam spends nearly US$500 million on importing meat in five months

VOV.VN - Vietnam spent a total of US$480.32 million on importing meat and meat products during the first five months of the year, representing a rise of 1.6% in volume but a fall of 9.1% in value compared to the same period from last year, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs.

May alone witnessed the country Vietnam import a total of 57,620 tonnes of meat and meat products worth US$108.8 million, representing a rise of 9.5% in volume, but a drop of 10.2% in value compared to May, 2022.

This marks the fourth consecutive month the meat import volume has increased against over the same period from last year.

The nation imported meat from 36 markets around the world, with the United States, India, Russia, Brazil, and Poland being the five largest suppliers of meat and meat products to the Vietnamese market. Indeed, meat imports from Russia continued to increase sharply after a decline endured in 2022.

However, meat imports from several markets experienced a downward trajectory such as Brazil, the Republic of Korea, Germany, Canada, and Australia.

Major meat import products include edible animal by-products, fresh, chilled, or frozen pork. In particular, the nation imported 29,610 tonnes of fresh chilled or frozen pork worth US$73.62 million, a decline of 19.9% in volume and 5.7% in value over the same period from last year.

Russia, Brazil, Germany, the Netherlands, and Canada represent the five largest suppliers of fresh chilled or frozen pork to the Vietnamese market.
