Vietnam ranks 6th globally in sturgeon production
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s sturgeon production has grown at an average annual rate of 49.13% between 2007 and 2023, placing the country among the top six producers of sturgeon in the world, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.

The development of cold-water aquaculture, primarily sturgeon farming, has opened new directions for the aquaculture sector, tapping the potential of cold-water bodies, improving infrastructure, creating jobs, increasing incomes, and enhancing living standards, while also contributing to national defence in remote and border areas.
Amid increasing global integration, the cold-water aquaculture industry is encouraged to adopt modern, industrialised production technologies tailored to regional ecological conditions. This approach aims to improve survival rates, ensure efficient production, save water, protect the environment, and enable traceability of products.
Priority is given to diversifying production models, with enterprises serving as the core, promoting linkages between businesses and local households, connecting production with market demand, ensuring quality transparency, reducing costs, and enhancing the brand value of Vietnamese cold-water fish.
Sturgeon is a high-value freshwater species, introduced and farmed in mountainous regions of Vietnam where water temperatures remain below 26°C all year round. Over nearly 20 years of development, sturgeon farming has expanded to almost 30 provinces, producing an estimated 4,000 tonnes annually.
Key sturgeon farming areas include northern and Central Highlands provinces such as Lam Dong, Lao Cai, Son La, Lai Chau, as well as mountainous areas in the central coastal provinces including Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Khanh Hoa, and Ninh Thuan.
