Strong growth pushes Vietnamese seafood to over 10% market share in Singapore

VOV.VN - Vietnamese seafood exports continued to gain ground in Singapore in the first half of 2025, with strong trade figures temporarily pushing Vietnam ahead of Norway to become the city-island state’s third-largest seafood supplier, after Malaysia and Indonesia.

According to data from Singapore’s Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA), seafood imports from Vietnam reached S$57.2 million (approximately US$42.33 million) in the reviewed period, up 10.8% from the same period in 2024 and accounting for 10.2% of Singapore’s total seafood import market.

Fillets and chilled or frozen fish meat remained Vietnam’s most valuable seafood export category to Singapore, generating S$29 million in the first half of the year, a 2.1% increase year-on-year and making up 29.6% of the market. This category is also where Vietnamese products continue to dominate.

Vietnam also recorded notable export values in two other groups: processed or unprocessed crustaceans (S$12.5 million) and processed or unprocessed molluscs (S$7.1 million), with respective market shares of 9.4% and 12.4%. Both groups saw positive growth over the same period, at 13.3% and a sharp 172.1%.

According to Vietnam’s Trade Counselor in Singapore, Cao Xuan Thang, Vietnam overtook Japan in 2024 to become Singapore’s fifth-largest seafood partner and maintained that position throughout the year. In the first quarter of 2025, Vietnam moved past China to rank fourth, and by mid-year had climbed to third. With Singapore’s seafood import demand holding steady, Vietnam is expected to maintain its strong performance, particularly in the fillet and chilled/frozen fish category.

ACRA data also indicates that Singapore’s total seafood imports from the global market in the first half of 2025 reached nearly S$559.5 million, up 2.4% from the same period last year.

Malaysia and Indonesia remained Singapore’s two largest suppliers, with imports worth S$75.2 million and S$63.2 million, making up 13.4% and 11.3% of the market, respectively.

Most of the imports from these countries were crustaceans (processed or unprocessed) and fresh or chilled fish excluding fillets.

By the end of June 2025, Vietnam had temporarily overtaken Norway to become Singapore’s third-largest seafood supplier, with main contributions from fillets, chilled or frozen fish, and crustaceans. While Vietnam holds the edge in overall volume, Norway remains a key player, continuing to lead in fresh or chilled fish (excluding fillets) with a 43.2% share in that segment.
