Vietnam opens trade promotion office in Hainan to expand economic ties with China
VOV.VN - A Vietnam Trade Promotion Office was inaugurated in Haikou, China’s Hainan province on April 8 by Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade in coordination with the People’s Government of Hainan province.
The event marks a concrete step in realizing common perceptions reached by senior leaders of the two countries, as shown in the Vietnam-China Joint Statement issued during the state visit to Vietnam by Party General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping in April 2025. It also reflects efforts by the Ministry of Industry and Trade to carry out the task assigned by the Prime Minister to establish trade promotion offices in localities across China.
At the event, a representative of the Ministry of Industry and Trade said the establishment of the office in Haikou is a concrete outcome of cooperation between the ministry and the People’s Government of Hainan province, aimed at implementing agreements and memoranda signed between the two sides in the economic and trade field.
To fully tap cooperation potential between Vietnamese localities and Hainan, the ministry called on relevant Chinese authorities to facilitate the office’s operations, enabling it to effectively perform its role as a bridge in trade and investment promotion and business connectivity.
The ministry also encouraged business associations and enterprises of both countries to make use of their complementary advantages and strengthen investment and business cooperation, thereby augmenting substantive economic and trade cooperation and contributing to elevating the Vietnam-China Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership.
A representative of the People’s Government of Hainan province said Vietnam is an important trading partner of China within ASEAN, with strong complementarity in areas such as tropical agriculture, logistics, the digital economy and tourism. The office is expected to serve as an effective bridge in providing information, connecting businesses and making full use of cooperation potential.
A representative of the Embassy of Vietnam in China said the establishment of the office is a concrete step to consolidate the foundation of bilateral relations and implement common perceptions of the two Parties and countries toward deeper and more substantive cooperation. The embassy will continue to coordinate and support the Ministry of Industry and Trade in establishing additional trade promotion offices in other localities in China.
In recent years, Vietnam-China economic and trade ties have continued to develop strongly. China remains Vietnam’s largest trading partner, while Vietnam is among China’s leading trading partners within ASEAN.
As Hainan officially launched its province-wide Free Trade Port on December 18, 2025 with a number of new policies, the Vietnam Trade Promotion Office in Haikou is expected to serve as a key point for trade promotion, business connectivity and investment cooperation, particularly in areas such as trade, logistics, agriculture, processing industries, the digital economy and e-commerce.
According to Vietnam’s statistics, bilateral trade reached US$256 billion in 2025, up 24.7% year-on-year, including exports of US$70.4 billion and imports of US$186 billion. Chinese data put total trade at US$296.1 billion, up 13.67%, with Vietnam’s exports at US$97.9 billion and imports at US$198.15 billion. Trade between Vietnam and Hainan hit approximately US$1.4 billion, accounting for a modest share of overall bilateral trade.
The launch of the Vietnam Trade Promotion Office in Haikou contributes to further promoting Vietnam-China economic and trade relations in a more substantive, effective and sustainable manner.
