Temu refunds customers in Vietnam after ceasing operations

VOV.VN - Temu, a major cross-border e-commerce platform of China, said that it has refunded customers in Vietnam on request of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, after deciding to cease operations in the market.

The news was confirmed Hoang Ninh, deputy director of the E-commerce and Digital Economy Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, on February 9.

Ninh explained that after Temu temporarily halted operations, orders placed were also suspended from being delivered to Vietnam. The platform was instructed to issue an apology and implement a refund policy for affected customers.

“To date, Temu has fully refunded the amounts to customers as per the Ministry’s request. If there are still cases where customers haven't received their refunds, it could be due to errors in the ordering or delivery process on the Temu platform,” he confirmed.

At the end of 2024, on request of Vietnamese authorities, Temu had to disable its Vietnamese version and temporarily halt operations while awaiting a license. The sudden suspension of the platform, after a period of aggressive promotion, caused concern among consumers who had paid but not yet received their goods.

After disabling the Vietnamese version, Temu issued an announcement in English about the ongoing registration process with the E-commerce and Digital Economy Department to operate in Vietnam, but did not specify a timeline for completion.

According to Ninh, Temu is still awaiting approval to operate in Vietnam. The platform's management has submitted their application but is waiting for the authorities to review the conditions before granting approval.

“In a spirit of cooperation, Elementary Innovation Pte. Ltd, the owner of Temu, is working quickly to complete the application for the necessary license. Since the Ministry of Industry and Trade's request, the platform has suspended operations in Vietnam to finalize the procedures. Once the conditions are met, the platform will be allowed to resume operations,” said Ninh.

He further stated that the exact date for Temu’s return to Vietnam remains unclear. According to regulations, only when Temu completes the necessary licensing documentation will the E-commerce and Digital Economy Department be able to consider and grant the operating license to the platform.
