Singapore seeks to increase rice, agricultural imports from Vietnam
VOV.VN - Singapore has expressed its desire to increase imports of rice and agricultural products from Vietnam, as the two countries have agreed to expand cooperation in agricultural trade, carbon credits and urban environmental management.
The commitment was reiterated by Singaporean Ambassador to Vietnam Rajpal Singh during a meeting with Minister of Agriculture and Environment Trinh Viet Hung in Hanoi on May 25.
Ambassador Singh said Vietnam-Singapore relations are entering a new phase of strong development following the elevation of ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
According to the ambassador, the new partnership framework provides favourable conditions for both sides to enhance information exchange, strengthen coordination among government agencies and effectively implement new cooperation programs.
Singh reaffirmed Singapore’s commitment to supporting Vietnam’s goal of achieving double-digit economic growth, adding that bilateral cooperation in agriculture, environment and green transition would contribute to Vietnam’s sustainable development objectives.
He highlighted that Singapore is keen to increase imports of Vietnamese rice, stressing Vietnam’s important role in ensuring regional food security. He said Vietnam could consider Singapore an important agricultural transshipment hub in the region.
He also noted that Singapore has approved imports of processed poultry products from Vietnam and is considering further market access for eggs, frozen poultry and pork products. In return, Singapore expressed interest in exporting processed meat products to Vietnam.
Singapore it is ready to support Vietnam in training and capacity building for officials in environmental management and carbon credit development, as well as sharing experience in operating carbon trading systems, he told his host.
Minister Hung, for his part, welcomed Singapore’s proposals and emphasised Vietnam’s interest in learning from Singapore’s experience in environmental governance, climate change response and green transport development.
He proposed that Singapore support market access for Vietnamese egg and frog meat products through closer coordination under the bilateral Joint Working Group framework.
On rice trade, Hung noted that Vietnam’s rice exports to Singapore have shown positive growth momentum, though bilateral trade turnover still holds considerable room for expansion. He suggested that Singapore support the development of specialised rice-growing areas in Vietnam dedicated to exports to the Singaporean market.
Both sides agreed to expand cooperation in agricultural trade, carbon credit mechanisms and urban environmental management, including efforts to implement Article 6 of the Paris Agreement between Vietnam and Singapore.
Minister Hung also expressed appreciation for Singapore’s cooperation commitments, reaffirming that Vietnam attaches great importance to its relations with Singapore on the basis of peace, mutual benefit and sustainable regional development.
