New cargo terminal project launched at Da Nang International Airport
VOV.VN - Da Nang International Airport on January 16 broke ground on a new cargo terminal designed to handle up to 100,000 tons of freight per year, a project expected to ease congestion at existing facilities and strengthen cargo transport capacity in Da Nang and the Central Highlands-Central Vietnam region.
The new terminal will be built on a site of more than 2.4 hectares on the northern side of the airport, with a total investment of over VND 631 billion. The project is invested by Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) and financed entirely from the company’s development funds.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Pham Duc An, Chairman of the Da Nang People’s Committee, praised the airport’s efforts in advancing the project, noting that it would support the city’s economic growth, tourism and logistics services. He said the municipal administration would provide the necessary support to ensure the project is carried out effectively and in line with development needs.
The municipal leader also called on relevant departments, the investor and construction units to work closely together to keep the project on schedule, ensure safety and meet quality standards.
Da Nang International Airport is one of Vietnam’s three largest airports, with passenger and cargo volumes continuing to rise. However, existing cargo handling infrastructure, particularly the cargo terminal that has been in operation since 2015, has come under increasing pressure.
According to Phan Kieu Hung, director of Da Nang International Airport, investment in a new cargo terminal is essential to keep pace with the rapid growth of air logistics services. Once operational, the facility is expected to enhance air cargo capacity, support import and export activities, improve the competitiveness of Vietnamese goods, and help attract investment while contributing to the city’s socio-economic development.
The new cargo terminal will comprise a main building of three floors and a mezzanine level, with a total floor area of about 18,000 square meters, along with auxiliary infrastructure meeting international standards. Construction is scheduled to take 12 months.
The project forms a key part of Da Nang’s plan to develop into a regional logistics hub for central Vietnam, linking the Central Key Economic Region with the East–West Economic Corridor.
