LEGO leader visits Vietnam, inspects US$1bln Binh Duong project

VOV.VN - LEGO Group Chief Operations Officer Carsten Rasmussen is in Vietnam to inspect the construction site of its US$1 billion plant in Binh Duong province.

During his meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh on May 11, Rasmussen briefed his host on the timeframe of the project, saying they plan to break ground for the plant in November 2022 and put it into operation in 2024.

The Binh Duong project he said is LEGO’s sixth plant in the world and the second in Asia, which is expected to help the group expand its global supply chain network.

Rasmussen thanked the Government, ministries, and agencies of Vietnam, as well as Binh Duong itself for their support so that the group made a quick decision to choose Vietnam as the location for the new plant.

For his part, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh highly appreciated LEGO’s investment decision in Binh Duong, noting the decision was made at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic was disrupting international trade and investment flows.

He reaffirmed the Government’s strong support for the LEGO-invested project, and requested relevant Vietnamese agencies, Binh Duong and the Danish toy manufacturer to continue working closely to complete all preparations for construction of the plant as planned.

LEGO last December signed a memorandum of understanding with the Vietnam–Singapore Industrial Park Joint Stock Company (VSIP) to undertake the project.

The project will cost more than US$1 billion including investment in solar energy production on the 44ha land area in Binh Duong. This is LEGO’s first ever carbon-neutral unit aiming to create 4,000 job opportunities over the next 15 years.

LEGO said local skilled workers will be trained to operate high-tech manufacturing equipment used in every LEGO plant worldwide, to ensure each product meets global standards.
