Gia Binh International Airport to take shape in Bac Ninh
VOV.VN - The National Assembly on December 11 approved the investment policy for the Gia Binh International Airport project in northern Bac Ninh province with expected capital of more than VND196 trillion (about US$7.8 billion).
The National Assembly Resolution received 410 votes in favour out of 427 deputies present at the plenary session.
The airport will be built across the communes of Gia Binh, Luong Tai, Nhan Thang and Lam Thao, and designed to meet the 4F standards of the International Civil Aviation Organisation. It is planned to handle 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tonnes of cargo a year by 2030, rising to 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tonnes by 2050.
The airport is expected to support economic growth in eastern Hanoi and meet rising demand across the northern key economic region.
The master plan includes two pairs of parallel runways spaced 1,800 metres apart, allowing independent operations. By 2030, the project will develop aprons, a VIP terminal, a passenger terminal, a cargo terminal and maintenance facilities with around 83 aircraft stands, expanding to 123 by 2050.
The passenger terminal will be built to five-star standards, with optimised space and full connectivity to national, regional and provincial transport networks. Hanoi will be linked directly via expressways, metro lines and national rail.
The government aims for Gia Binh to become a smart, green and sustainable international airport, capable of dual-use operations and meeting top-tier global benchmarks. Authorities plan for the facility to rank among the world’s top 10 five-star airports, according to Skytrax, and deliver “excellent passenger experience” as rated by Airports Council International.
It is also intended to serve as a northern gateway and a regional hub for passenger transit, cargo handling and aircraft maintenance in the Asia-Pacific.
