German state seeks new opportunities in Vietnam’s agriculture sector

VOV.VN - Vietnam has long been a trusted and reliable partner of the German state of Thuringia. By placing greater focus on agriculture and agri-tech, areas where Vietnam has both strengths and strategic importance, the two sides can further strengthen and expand the foundation for mutually beneficial cooperation.

That was the affirmation of Marcus Malsch, State Secretary of Thuringia’s Ministry for Economy, Agriculture and Rural Development who is leading a working delegation of about 40 representatives from agricultural businesses and organizations of the state on a visit to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang City from November 3 to 8.

The delegation’s goal is to seek new partners in agriculture, food processing, and human resources development, thereby opening up more avenues for bilateral cooperation. Agriculture currently accounts for about 10%of Vietnam’s gross domestic product (GDP) and provides jobs for nearly one-third of the country’s workforce.

The Thuringia delegation is expected to share modern technologies and production processes that will help Vietnamese enterprises enhance efficiency and add value in agricultural processing.

Conversely, the demand for skilled agricultural workers in Thuringia is projected to continue rising in the years ahead. Expanding vocational training cooperation between Vietnam and Thuringia, particularly in green jobs, is thus seen as a practical and sustainable direction.

Bilateral trade between Thuringia and Vietnam currently stands at about 220 million euros (over US$253 million). More than 40 Thuringian enterprises maintain regular export activities to Vietnam. “This potential remains vast and can certainly be further expanded,” Malsch affirmed.

Their cooperation extends beyond trade to include vocational training and labor recruitment. By 2025, over 300 young Vietnamese will have begun vocational training in southern Thuringia under a partnership project between local enterprises and vocational organizations in Vietnam.
