Fruit and vegetable exports top US$2.67 billion in January-May
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports exceeded US$2.67 billion during the past five months of 2026, up 16% year-on-year, according to preliminary data from Vietnam Customs.
Export turnover in May hit US$614.788 million, almost unchanged from the same month last year.
Fruit and vegetable imports in May rose 25% year-on-year to more than US$245 million, bringing total imports in January-May to nearly US$1.3 billion. The sector recorded a trade surplus of about US$1.37 billion during the reviewed period.
China, the United States and the Republic of Korea (RoK) were Vietnam’s three largest export markets for fruit and vegetables. Exports to markets including the Netherlands, Germany and Malaysia continued to grow strongly, helping reduce dependence on several key markets.
Durian was a bright spot in fruit and vegetable exports, posting strong growth. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, durian export turnover hit close to US$222 million, up 127.8% from a year earlier. The expansion of approved growing-area codes has helped fuel the increase.
Traditional products such as dragon fruit, bananas, mangoes and coconuts also maintained stable exports. Coconut, in particular, is being identified as a strategic export product in the coming period.
According to the Import-Export Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, demand for imported fruit and vegetables in major markets worldwide is expected to continue growing in 2026 amid rising demand for healthy food and the recovery of the global economy. The global fresh fruit and vegetable market is projected to reach about US$934.6 billion this year.
Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports are expected to see positive signs in the coming months as several key fruits enter the peak harvest season, with abundant supply and clearer improvements in quality and traceability.
