Flexible market shifts help sustain tuna exports in early 2026
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s tuna exports held steady in the first two months of 2026 despite fluctuations in the global market, with gains in emerging destinations offsetting declines in several traditional ones.
Data from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers show export turnover reached US$129 million in January-February, unchanged from a year earlier. While overall growth stood at 0%, the market structure is undergoing notable shifts.
The US remained the largest importer of Vietnamese tuna. Export value to this market, however, fell 15% over the two-month period, attributed to technical barriers and changes in domestic consumption policies.
In contrast, Vietnamese exporters moved quickly to tap other markets. Exports to Russia, Japan, Germany and Israel posted strong growth, emerging as key bright spots.
Market diversification has helped the sector maintain balance, reducing reliance on any single destination.
The performance shows firms’ responsiveness in adapting to free trade agreements (FTAs) and efforts to improve product quality to meet strict standards in Europe, including Germany, as well as demanding markets such as Japan.
To sustain growth in the coming quarters, experts say the seafood sector needs to closely track market developments, expand into niche markets and invest further in deep processing to raise value added for tuna exports.
