Eight-month coffee exports reach record high in volume and value

VOV.VN - Vietnam’s coffee industry set a new export record in the first eight months of the year, shipping 1.2 million tons worth US$6.42 billion, up 8.7% in volume and 59.1% in value compared to the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.

Trinh Duc Minh, Chairman of the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association, attributed the surge to favorable global prices and the industry’s focus on quality, specialty coffee development, sustainability certification, and adherence to international standards. These measures have enhanced Vietnam’s coffee reputation, reduced exposure to price swings, and created more stable long-term value.

The average export price hit around US$5,580 per ton, up 46.4% year-on-year. Key markets such as Germany, Italy, and Spain accounted for 14.5%, 7.5%, and 7.4% of total exports, respectively, with Germany’s export value doubling and Italy’s rising by 51.5%. Exports to Spain increased 60.8%, while Mexico recorded an exceptional 91-fold surge. Even in China, export value rose 11.7%.

Le Duc Huy, Chairman of Simexco Daklak, noted that contracts signed late last year amid high global prices contributed to the record value. Over the past decade, Vietnam has improved production processes, enhancing Robusta quality and making its coffee more appealing to international roasters at premium prices.

Beyond volume growth, Vietnam has advanced in deep processing and specialty coffee production, expanding into high-end markets in the EU, US, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and China. Success stems from strategic investments in technology, supply chain transparency, traceability, and effective utilization of free trade agreements, including the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), the UK-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

The industry now faces challenges from tightening global environmental regulations, such as the EU Deforestation Regulation. Experts, however, see an opportunity for Vietnam to pivot from mass production toward sustainable, green development, aligning the sector with circular economy principles, promoting cultural values, and strengthening climate resilience.
