Can Tho breaks ground on US$570 mln wind power project

VOV.VN - The Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on May 19 held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Soc Trang 4 Wind Power Plant, a VND14.5 trillion (US$570 million) renewable energy project aimed at supporting Vietnam’s green growth and energy transition goals.

The event, organised in Vinh Chau Ward, was among key national projects commemorating the 136th birth anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh.

Developed by Soc Trang 1 Energy Investment JSC, the project will have a designed capacity of 350 MW with 56 wind turbines. Commercial operations are expected to begin by the end of 2028.

According to project investor - Construction Trade Corporation JSC, the plant is designed to generate around 1.3 billion kWh of clean electricity annually for the national grid once operational. It will support local economic growth, create jobs and contribute to environmental protection efforts.

Truong Canh Tuyen, chairman of the Can Tho municipal People’s Committee, described the project as significant politically, economically and socially, reflecting the city’s commitment to sustainable development and renewable energy expansion.

The project is set to contribute nearly 1.5 billion kWh per year to the national power grid, helping strengthen energy security, promote green growth and support Vietnam’s greenhouse gas reduction commitments, he said.

Tuyen called on investors, contractors and consultants to ensure construction quality, progress and safety, while urging local authorities to facilitate the project’s implementation and promptly address obstacles.

Under Vietnam’s national power development plan for 2021–2030 with a vision to 2050, Can Tho is expected to host 56 power projects with a combined capacity of nearly 10,000 MW by 2030, including 30 wind power projects totaling around 3,000 MW.

To date, the city has approved investment policies for 20 wind power projects with combined capacity of nearly 1,500 MW, while another 10 projects with total capacity of around 1,000 MW are seeking investors.

At the ceremony, the project developer donated VND1 billion to social welfare programmes in Vinh Chau Ward.
