Quang Ninh breaks ground on first wind power project
VOV.VN - A groundbreaking ceremony for the Quang Ninh 1 Wind Power Plant, the province’s first wind energy project, was held in Cai area, Hoanh Bo ward, on April 23, marking a significant step toward green and sustainable energy development.
For years, Quang Ninh has been known as one of Vietnam’s major energy hubs, with seven coal-fired thermal power plants totaling nearly 5,900 MW and supplying tens of billions of kWh annually to the national grid.
However, amid growing demand for sustainable development, emissions reduction and climate adaptation, the province is gradually reducing its reliance on coal while accelerating the development of renewable energy sources in line with the Power Development Plan VIII, with a vision to 2050.
In this context, the launch of the Quang Ninh 1 Wind Power Plant marks the beginning of the province’s wind energy sector. The project has a capacity of 200 MW, with a total investment of around VND7.3 trillion, and will be built on forestry land in Hoanh Bo ward and Thong Nhat commune. It will feature 32 wind turbines using modern technology.
Once operational, expected in 2028, the plant will generate nearly 600 million kWh of clean electricity annually, helping stabilise power supply in northern Vietnam and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Tran Quang Tuyen, representing the investor consortium, said that since receiving investment approval from provincial authorities on December 29, 2025, local agencies have actively supported the project, particularly in land procedures, legal documentation, site clearance and handover. He affirmed the consortium’s commitment to ensuring safe, high-quality and efficient construction.
Beyond its technical significance, the project reflects a broader shift in the province’s energy development mindset, from reliance on traditional resource extraction to the promotion of clean energy.
Le Van Anh, vice chairman of the Quang Ninh People’s Committee, called on investors and contractors to mobilise maximum resources, apply advanced technologies, and ensure construction progress, quality, environmental protection and labor safety, while minimising impacts on local communities.
He also urged provincial departments and local authorities to continue supporting the project, promptly addressing obstacles and avoiding administrative bottlenecks.
Once operational, the plant is expected to generate annual revenue of around VND1.2 trillion, contribute to the state budget and create stable jobs for more than 100 workers.
