Cambodian agricultural exports to Vietnam skyrocket
VOV.VN - Cambodia's agricultural exports to the Vietnamese market is steadily on the uptick, with the first 11 months of the year seeing Cambodian export of rice, cashew nut, corn, green bean and soybean to Vietnam grow by 3-4 times over the same period from last year.
According to figures given by the Cambodia Trade Office in Vietnam, Cambodia shipped more than 7.13 million tonnes of agricultural products to 68 nations and territories across the world during the reviewed period, posting a year-on-year rise of 93.4%.
Notably, the neighbouring country exported over 622,000 tonnes of fresh cassava to Vietnam, accounting for 75.7% of total exports.
Prof. Dr. Vo Tong Xuan attributed the increase in Cambodian exports to the Vietnamese market to its agricultural products enjoying greater advantages in terms of price and quality compared to local goods, and using fewer pesticides.
Xuan went on to add that Vietnamese farmers and enterprises tended to move to Cambodia to rent agricultural land in order to grow potatoes, cassava, sugarcane, and corn, or to raise cows thanks to low rental prices and cheap labour costs.
He explained that when harvested, agricultural products will be exported to Vietnam for consumption, therefore causing a sudden increase in Cambodian agricultural exports to the nation this year.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Cambodia is a strongly competitive country in terms of farm produce in Southeast Asia, with its agricultural products having high yield, and being much sought by many countries.
