Big opportunities ahead for local firms in Japan’s industrial supply chain
VOV.VN - The Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency (VIETRADE) and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) will jointly host two major exhibitions in manufacturing and supporting industries, presenting valuable opportunities for Vietnamese companies to deepen their integration into Japan’s industrial supply chain.

The two industrial events are the 11th Vietnam - Japan Supporting Industries Exhibition in Hanoi and the Vietnam Manufacturing Expo 2025.
Addressing a press conference in Hanoi on June 3, VIETRADE director Vu Ba Phu highlighted that by the end of 2024, Vietnam’s supporting industry comprised over 6,000 enterprises operating across various sectors such as textiles and garments, automobile manufacturing and assembly, leather and footwear, mechanical engineering, and electronics.
The supporting industry has played a crucial role in advancing Vietnam’s key industries, contributing to a significant rise in the country’s trade surplus, from US$2 billion in 2017 to over US$28 billion in 2024.
However, it currently meets only about 10% of domestic component demand. This shortfall presents a considerable challenge, as Vietnam still imports billions of dollars worth of components annually to support local production.
Meanwhile, Haruhiko Ozasa, chief representative of JETRO in Hanoi, shared results from a 2024 JETRO survey, revealing that 56.1% of Japanese companies in Vietnam plan to expand their investments in the coming years, while 50.9% intend to increase procurement from Vietnamese partners - the highest rate across ASEAN. The fact, he said, underscores Vietnam’s growing importance as a strategic hub in the global supply chain.
Against this backdrop, the upcoming Vietnam - Japan Supporting Industries Exhibition and Vietnam Manufacturing Expo 2025 are set to serve as strategic platforms connecting Vietnamese enterprises with international investors and buyers.
The supporting industry exhibition is expected to witnessed the participation of 20 Japanese buyers who will seek partners in key areas such as industrial plastics, electronic components, and other supporting products. At the same time, approximately 20 local companies with potential production and supply capabilities will directly engage with Japanese partners.
Organizers expect over 200 exhibitors from more than 10 countries, including 160 foreign enterprises, to participate in the two events.
A series of thematic seminars will be held, focusing on automation, smart factory solutions, and investment promotion in the supporting industry, aiming to attract investment to Vietnam’s key manufacturing sectors.
