Ample room for rice exports in coming months

VOV.VN - With export markets showing signs of recovery from the COVID-19 hit period, Vietnamese businesses have seized opportunities to seek and execute orders in the opening days of the year.

Since the start of the year, local rice businesses have continuously received large export orders from foreign importers, congthuong.vn reported.

January alone witnessed businesses export 505,741 tonnes of rice worth US$246 million, representing annual rises of 45.4% in volume and 28.2% in value.

Pham Thai Binh, general director of Trung An High-Tech Agriculture Joint Stock Company, revealed that the firm is expected to deliver approximately 15,000 tonnes of 100% broken rice to the Republic of Korea (RoK) by March.

It’s noteworthy that the export price of Vietnamese rice to the RoK is estimated to stand at US$369 per tonne, roughly US$31 per tonne higher than the country’s average export price.

Along with the RoK market, the firm has signed a number of export contracts with partners in the European Union and other Asian countries, Binh added.

However, industry experts pointed out that rice processors, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), continue to face hurdles ahead, including escalating input costs, high transportation costs, and skyrocketing prices of other agricultural materials.

Phan Van Co, marketing director of Vrice Co., Ltd, shared that the recent sharp increase in petrol prices coupled with high input fees has fueled production costs, severely impacting the company’s export activities.

According to the Vietnam Food Association, the country’s leading rice producers such as Loc Troi, Tan Long, Vinaseed, and Trung An have been gradually completing their value chains by applying modern technologies in an effort to reduce production costs, increase productivity, and improve product quality.
