90-day US tariff suspension: Will Vietnam seize the window of opportunity ?

VOV.VN - The US decision to temporarily suspend the 46% tariff on Vietnamese imports for 90 days has received positive reactions from the business community and economic experts. However, some analysts remain concerned about whether Vietnam can fully capitalize on the opportunity.

Suspension seen as timely lifeline

The move not only eases pressure on Vietnamese exporters but also paves the way for bilateral trade talks between the two countries.

By delaying the tariff, Vietnamese exporters can avoid financial strain and maintain their competitiveness in the US market. Key sectors such as garments and textiles, footwear, and electronics stand to benefit directly, helping businesses retain orders and sustain operations.

This policy shift also creates room for Vietnam and the US to engage in negotiations toward a fairer and more sustainable trade agreement.

Following the announcement, major exporters in Vietnam, especially in garments and textiles, electronics, and furniture expressed relief and renewed optimism.

Chu Thi Thu Thuy, Deputy General Director of Bac Giang LGG Garment Corporation shared, “If the 46% tariff had been enforced, most small and medium-sized enterprises in our industry would have faced significant challenges. This suspension is a timely lifeline.
It allows us to maintain orders and stabilize production, especially amid ongoing global uncertainties caused by the pandemic and prolonged geopolitical tensions. We appreciate the decision, as it gives both sides valuable time to negotiate.”

Similarly, the Vietnam Association of Mechanical Enterprises (VAMI) noted that the suspension allows firms to preserve their orders and maintain stable operations in a volatile global market.

Will Vietnam make the most of the 'golden 90 days'?

Domestic experts see this as a moment of “temporary relief.” According to Dr. Can Van Luc, the suspension is largely positive and in line with the expectations of governments, businesses, and investors from both countries. The 90-day window provides time for the parties to review issues and negotiate potential agreements. It also offers a chance for stakeholders to prepare alternative plans and strategies.

The US suspension presents a valuable opportunity for Vietnam to engage in dialogue and pursue a fair and long-term trade solution. However, analysts caution that 90 days is not a long period, and Vietnam must act swiftly to strengthen its case, demonstrate goodwill, and affirm its transparency in trade with the US.

Experts say that this is a crucial window for Vietnam and the US to solidify trade ties and work toward a mutually beneficial and sustainable partnership. Although the temporary delay yields short-term gains, challenges still lie ahead.

Both sides must make the most of the time available to tackle outstanding issues and reach common ground.

In addition, the fact that the US is maintaining a 10% tariff on many other countries and raising duties on China to 125%- signals that its trade policy remains unpredictable. This places pressure on Vietnam to stay alert and adjust its trade strategies accordingly.

Ultimately, the 90-day suspension offers both countries a key opportunity to deepen trade cooperation and pursue long-term solutions to shared economic challenges. But to capitalize on it, both sides must undertake serious negotiations and close collaboration to reach a fair, lasting agreement, thereby contributing to economic growth and regional stability.
